Humble Obedience

Hebrews 13:17
“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.”
Romans 13:2-3 states, “The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgement on themselves.” Regardless of how we may feel about leadership in any particular circumstance, we must remain obedient because when we are disobedient, we are falling short of the Word of God. Sometimes, as followers, we can be ignorant towards the position that leadership has and what that title actually means. Leaders are not only responsible for those who are under them, but they also must ensure that they are always setting an example that is parallel to the Word of God. We only see what those in authority choose to display, and therefore we are quick to criticize the decisions they make because we only know what they have presented to us. At this point, we are responsible in humbling ourselves and trusting that those entrusted above us know the entirety of what is going on and have made a rational decision in concordance to the Truth. Though leadership is meant to be looked up to, sometimes they do fail and the whole flock suffers, but in those moments come growth for both groups and if used appropriately, can be glorifying to the Lord. In my own life, I have had many placed above me that I have questioned the way that they have approached certain situations. I assumed that my way was better and rather than obeying, I rebelled and severely suffered the consequences that followed. Though I may not have agreed with them, it was not in my jurisdiction to overstep and had I “followed the leader” I could have grasped that there was a reason behind their decision that  perhaps was not meant to be understood at that particular moment in time. For every action, there is a reaction and I want to be sure that my reaction to what is being asked of me is glorifying to the Lord.

Application
Today, I will ask a leader regarding an area in my own life that they have witnessed in which I could grow in.

Confidence in the Unseen

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” In this scenario, Jesus is speaking of the promises he will deliver and has delivered to those who are diligent in their faith in Him. Although often times we cannot see the work that God is doing in our life, He commands us to be faithful because as James 1:2-3 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”  Recently, I have been facing a constant battle regarding my own faith in Christ. Since coming to IGNITE, I have found myself having several moments of severe anger and depression because my lack of faith has left me crippled with fear. Fear that the Lord will not move in my life, fear that I will never be the woman He intends for me to be, fear that I will always be a slave to my sin. As I sit there and wallow in my self pity, I eventually come to the same...

Vision for Success

Acts 5:29 “Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!” Peter is referring to the high priest who is accusing the apostles of teaching the word of Jesus Christ to Jerusalem when He specifically ordered them not to. Peter follows this rebuke with, “We must obey God rather than human beings!” There is only One in which we are to obey fully, and He is the Man who bled and died. Regardless of how mighty someone is placed in the world, the Lord knows everyone for who they are, sinners in need of a savior. Everyone has their alcohol, even those in authority. How can we obey authority that sins? Romans 13:1 says, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” Everyone submits to someone because without authority, there is no order, and without order, there is chaos. However, there is a difference between godly authority and worldly authority. The difference is godly authority ...

Peace, Be Still

Psalms 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.” With less than one week left in Uganda, I am faced with the dire fact that a flood of goodbyes awaits me. How do I say goodbye to a country that I have fallen in love with over the course of is months? Be still. How do I readjust to the American way of living without falling back into habits of old? Be still. The Lord has given me the comforting words of Psalms 121:8, which has given me the strength to be confident in knowing that the Lord is in control, promising to preserve me in my coming and my going. Saying goodbye has never been and will never become easy, but there is peace in knowing that the Lord has confirmed the end of this season to begin the next. There is peace in knowing that it is not goodbye, but see you soon. There is peace in the stillness of trusting that God’s plan for my life is always in my best interest even heartache is involved. I remember quite fondly a time where I was not interested in coming to Africa a...
