Proverbs 9:9
“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.”
Wisdom: the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement. The book of Proverbs gives us a greater understanding as to why we need a foundation of heavenly wisdom for, “By wisdom a house is built” (Proverbs 24:3). Without wisdom, we are unable to discern the Lord’s voice from our own and when we listen to ourselves rather than to Him, we remain in our self righteousness, a sin nonetheless. A wise man is able to understand that God’s plan is greater than his own and is able to act in the Lord’s favor for His glory rather than for the desires of his own flesh. Furthermore, as his walk becomes stronger, his wisdom becomes greater because he listens to the advice of wise counsel and is able to achieve victory. A wise man is not moved by the happenings of this life because he knows that the Lord’s promise to carry him through will never change. A wise man is not moved because he knows of the life to come, that his home address is not his home. If I said that I have been able to act in heavenly wisdom, I would be nothing short of a liar for I have very little if any. Though I have experience, I never seem to learn from the hardships I endure, hence why when circumstances arise in my life, I am quick to be moved. It is only after the storm ceases that I am able to look back and see the Lord’s hand in everything, that I yet again had no real reason to worry for He was with me. When will I learn to approach the Lord boldly in question for what I lack and He can provide? James 1:5 reassures us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” If those with heavenly wisdom became wise from asking and receiving, then so will I.
Application
This week, I will ask the Lord for His wisdom.
